Microsoft Unveils Windows on ARM, Surface 2 at CES

Hours before Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took the stage for his Jan. 5 keynote here at the Consumer Electronics Show, his company held a press conference to spoil at least a part of his big surprises.

The reason seems fairly straightforward: CES takes place in Vegas, and Ballmer's keynote--scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PST--takes place after all but the most die-hard news junkies have signed off their RSS feeds. By holding a press conference for 1 p.m. Vegas time, Microsoft could occupy at least part of a news cycle with the announcement that the next version of Windows will support System on a Chip (SoC) architecture, in particular ARM-based systems from partners such as Qualcomm, Nvidia and Texas Instruments.

What does this mean for you? The potential for a broader variety of Windows-based devices in the future, notably tablets. Windows currently dominates the x86 platform used by traditional PCs, but the rise of powerful mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets--powered largely by ARM chip designs--has effectively created a whole new market for the operating system, provided Microsoft can work out the inevitable engineering issues.

"Under the hood there's a ton of differences that need to be worked through," Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows and Windows Live Division, told the audience at the press conference. "Windows has proven remarkably flexible at this under-the-hood sort of stuff. We work on storage from Flash all the way up to terabytes of storage" and "Windows kernel on alternate architectures."

Microsoft used the press conference to show off ARM running various Windows applications, including Internet Explorer and PowerPoint. It all seemed very smooth in the demonstration, but much work evidently needs to be done before ARM-based Windows becomes a reality you can purchase at your local Best Buy--Sinofsky seemed reluctant to offer any sort of firm release date.

Microsoft executives also demonstrated some interesting new devices in the pipeline, including a Samsung laptop whose keyboard slides to make the device a tablet, and an Acer laptop with two touch-screens. (Whether you pay hundreds of dollars for the latter, of course, seems dependent on your tolerance for virtual keyboards.) Also on display: Surface 2, the next generation of the company's table-sized touch-screen tablet. This new version runs Windows 7, and its Gorilla Glass front apparently means it can resist a bottle dropped from 18 inches or less--evidently, restaurants are among the commercial enterprises intended as potential customers for the device.

These little demonstrations, of course, make me wonder what the company's holding in reserve for Ballmer's presentation. We'll see in a few hours.

Facebook enables one-click identity theft option for rogue application developers

In a rather odd and haphazard move, Facebook has now made it possible for apps to read your home address and mobile telephone number.

In the "Request for Permission" window -- the one you have to accept before using an app on the Facebook platform -- look out for "Access my contact information", with the subtitle "Current Address and Mobile Phone Number" (see image above). You'd think that such important details would deserve a bolder warning, instead of the usual faded gray -- but obviously not.

As Sophos' Naked Security blog points out, making such details available in a landscape that is already packed full of rogue spam and scam applications puts Facebook users at even greater risk. With your full name and home address, identity theft basically becomes a no-brainer -- and can you imagine the SMS spam that awaits the unlucky Facebooker that gives his phone number to the wrong app developer?

Still, even if you're not bothered by this (and you can always remove your home address or mobile number from Facebook), you have wonder what Facebook will do next. Facebook is quickly becoming The One True Internet Hub, and the wealth of data it knows about us is terrifying. If access to incredibly sensitive data can be reduced to a small-font subtitle in a cluttered permission box, it's only a matter of time until you accidentally press "Allow" and fritter away your entire life story to a random rogue developer.

Darn, we've barely started getting acquainted with Tegra 2, yet NVIDIA seems to already be preparing the stage for a sort of Tegra 2.5 -- a 1.2GHz dual-core chip that'll be marketed as a 3D-capable mobile processor. This T25 silicon is apparently set for mass production in the first quarter of this year, with availability coming up in the spring. Given the noises we keep hearing about 3D going mobile, this is one rumor that makes a lot of sense -- and even if you're a staunch supporter of the 2D creed, you can't deny that a sped-up Tegra 2 CPU sounds pretty delicious. We've managed to also track down some technical chatter about adding support to Chromium OS for a 1.2GHz T25 from NVIDIA, seemingly corroborating the leaked image above. Oh boy, it's gonna be a hot summer for mobile computing this year!

Slash Boom is a fun, easy physics time waster

Slash Boom is one of the easier time-wasters I've played recently, but I still enjoyed it. The rules are very simple: Your goal is to blow most of the structure off the screen. At each level, you get two "slashes" and one "boom". The "slashes" are click-and-drag motions you make across the structure, which cut it. Once you've placed two strategic cuts, it's time for the "boom": simply click anywhere on the screen to strategically detonate a bomb.

You can either click on the structure itself or next to it; if you placed your "slashes" strategically enough and picked a good spot for the bomb, a significant chunk of the structure will fly off the screen.

You will probably fly through the first few levels, but then the shapes become a bit more complex, and the game gets harder. I like it that they made the game harder by making more "difficult" shapes, rather than just making them larger (and thus more difficult to explode off the screen).

Bottom line: It's a quick, fun brain-teaser.

Canadians, you must chafe under the yoke of a Gingerbread-free existence no longer, for the Nexus S is coming to the Great White North sometime in March. According to Mobilicity CEO Dave Dobbin, the handset will be available on the company's AWS band, but he also said that Bell, Telus, and Rogers will carry the Nexus S as well. If true, that means Samsung will be providing another model of the phone with support for WCDMA 850 / 1900 for it to work with Canada's big three wireless providers. We can only hope that's the case, as said model would be usable on AT&T's network -- making an awful lot of us living south of Canada quite happy. Google has once again posted optimistic growth this quarter boasting $8.44 billion in revenue, and increase of 26% compared to fourth quarter of 2009 in which revenue was $6.67 billion. Traffic acquisition costs, which Google includes in the $8.44 billion number were $2.07 billion, or 25% of total revenue.�The slides above show more in-depth results. Google beat the street easily, with analysts expecting non-GAAP earnings per share at $8.06 and $6.1 billion in net revenue.�Non-GAAP earning per share in the fourth quarter of 2010 were actually $8.75.

Microsoft's Muglia Retired by Ballmer

Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft's Server and Tools Business, will depart the company this summer. That's Microsoft's first big news following CES, and it suggests that 2010's executive-suite shakeups are continuing unabated into the New Year.

Mulia's a 23-year veteran of Microsoft, and the Server and Tools Business was a solid financial success under his watch. That makes the news somewhat startling, especially since CEO Steve Ballmer's e-mail announcing the departure has all the warmth and cheer of Michael Corleone "retiring" Moe Greene:

"The best time to think about change is when you are in a position of strength, and that's where we are today with STB--leading the server business, successful with our developer tools, and poised to lead the rapidly emerging cloud future," Ballmer wrote in the Jan. 10 missive to Microsoft's employees. "Bob Muglia and I have been talking about the overall business and what is needed to accelerate our growth. In this context, I have decided that now is the time to put new leadership in place for STB."

Step One: Make your Division out-perform! Step Two: Get booted for it!

Muglia will apparently stay on-board through the summer, while the company conducts "an internal and external search for the new leader." In addition, Ballmer framed the leadership changeup as "simply recognition that all businesses go through cycles and need new and different talent to manage through those cycles."

Microsoft has seen a number of executives jump ship in recent months. In October, Ballmer announced that Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie had decided to resign from his post. "The CSA role was unique and I won't refill the role after Ray's departure," the CEO wrote in an Oct. 18 email to the company.

Ozzie's departure, too, was framed within the context of Microsoft's larger business. "With our progress in services and the cloud now full speed ahead in all aspects of our business, Ray and I are announcing today Ray's intention to step down from his role as chief software architect," Ballmer wrote in an Oct. 18 email to the company. "Following the natural transition time with his teams, but before he retires from Microsoft, Ray will be focusing his efforts in the broader area of entertainment where Microsoft has many ongoing investments."

In September 2010, Microsoft Business Division Presidents Stephen Elop resigned his position to take the CEO reins at Nokia. And earlier in the year, a shakeup in Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division saw the simultaneous departures of Robbie Bach, president of that unit, and J Allard, its senior vice president of design and development.

Maybe Ballmer wants a Muglia replacement who can offer a fresh focus on the cloud. Maybe this is all the result of an internal power-struggle, or Ballmer continuing his house-cleaning and division-reordering from last year. Whatever the case, I can't help but feel there'll be an inevitable morale problem if Ballmer decides to replace a longstanding employee with someone from outside the company.

This is said to "solve the game discovery problem" by popping out of the Market but certainly won't do much to solve revenue problems for devs working on premium mobile games. After only hinting at its existence this morning, it is now possible to install Unity 2D on both the latest stable version of Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), and the upcoming 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

Unity 2D takes the form of a normal Personal Package Archive (PPA) that goes by the name 'Unity-Qt'. You can get it by simply adding the the Unity 2D repository, updating apt-get, and then installing it. WebUpd8 reports that the PPA is broken at the moment, resulting in some additional steps to get it working -- but just follow their guide, and you'll be running Unity 2D in no time!

Initial reactions suggest that Unity 2D is pretty darn slick, and a viable alternative if you can't run, or don't want to run, the 3D version. There's a video of it in action after the break.

First off, let me preface this time waster by saying it requires a download. That's right - this is not a Flash game, and you have to run it from your own computer. But it is free and available for Windows, OS X and Linux, and this is Download Squad after all.

Last week I wrote about a time waster called Flyde, saying it really reminded me of an old game I used to play as a kid, but couldn't remember its name. Commenter TnS was the first to point out I'm talking about SkyRoads. Of course, I immediately went to Wikipedia to read all about this old favorite of mine, and that's where I found a modern re-make: Tasty Static.

Tasty Static is fast. Just like SkyRoads, you drive a race car along a track that hangs in space, and you must constantly jump and move left and right to keep the track under your vehicle. Press UP to accelerate, LEFT and RIGHT to turn, and SPACE to jump. If you're chicken, you can also press DOWN to slow down. You know you shouldn't, though.

By default, the resolution is just 640x480, but it's not like you're missing out on a lot of detail. The graphics can be described as rudimentary at best - there are just enough pixels on the screen for you to see the road and the obstacles. But hey, that's what retro is all about, right?

Still wondering if the future of display linkage really lies in DisplayPort? Hard to say for sure, but IDT's definitely making a good case for it with its latest demonstration. Integrated Device Technology has seemingly figured out how to shuffle touch information through DisplayPort's existing auxiliary channel, which simplifies and lowers the cost of integrating touch technology into tablets, laptops, AIO PCs, monitors, etc. It's being hailed as the world's first usage of the DisplayPort AUX channel to carry touch screen data, and if the prototype proves solid, it'll allow laptop manufacturers to eliminate USB interface communication from host to panel and reduce the number of wires that must pass through the display's hinge. And you know what that means -- slimmer, more flexible designs. IDT's not barking about a release date for its latest trick, but we're guessing it'll have display makers begging for access in no time flat.

We do love to hear from loquacious execs, and HP's Todd Bradley has been the very definition of one in an interview conducted with CNBC during CES. In a discussion revolving around webOS, Bradley was asked how HP intends to differentiate itself from the iPad and improve upon it, to which he quipped, "you and I will talk about that on the 9th." If that's not a confirmation that we'll finally have our unicorn of a webOS tablet next month, we don't know what is. Even more encouraging is the implication further on in the interview that HP could have debuted this slate at CES, but opted to do an unveiling at a separate event so as to properly highlight just how awesome it is. But wait, there's yet more good news for webOS fans: Bradley's crew sees its upcoming tablet as just "one piece" of the connected experience that is the company's goal and we're promised to be enlightened about a broad range of webOS devices at the February 9th event in San Francisco, though the lack of any Palm namedrops seems to suggest they might not bear the name of their maker. HyperMac is known more for its power-extending solutions than its other peripherals, but this still-unannounced iPad external hard drive enclosure we spotted at the company's booth is certainly interesting. Capable of accepting a standard 2.5-inch hard drive, the brushed metal box has two miniUSB ports around back -- one to connect to your computer, and another to connect to your iPad. Unfortunately, unlike other iPad storage solutions like the AirStash, because it interfaces through Apple's USB camera adapter, you're limited to photos and video content only. On top of that, it only works with the iPad because the iPhone and iPod touch don't support that particular accessory. The target price point is around $100 without any physical drive -- yes, it's a BYOHD affair -- which is definitely steeper than we'd like, especially given the limited functionality. Still, if you've got more content than space to spare, you might want to look into picking one of these up when it drops in sometime later this month.

2011 is shaping up to be the year consumer-grade 3D camcorders take off. Now JVC is in the mix with its new GS-TD1 full HD 3D camcorder which it touts as a world first. Thanks to twin 3D HD GT lenses, two 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensors and a newly announced Falconbrid 3D image chip, the device can record both left and right streams of 1920 x 1080i simultaneously. It also features 5x zoom and 64GB of flash memory that can be expanded via an SD card slot. Besides the full HD mode, the camera supports the more common side-by-side format AVCHD 3D as well as AVCHD 2D. For better in-field review, the device packs a 3.5-inch glasses free 3D touch panel screen. Outside of 3D video, the camera is additionally equipped to record so-called 3D sound using BIPHONIC sound processing. Not one to let the hyperconservative Australian government walk away with the censorship crown, the UK government plans to make the surfing of Internet porn opt-in. Next month, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey will meet with major UK ISPs to discuss a blanket block of porn. Rather than porn being available to all, UK surfers will have to contact their ISP to be allowed on a 'porn surfing whitelist.'

In customary political masquerading style, this is being pushed through as a "think of the kids!!" measure. It recently emerged that as many as one-in-three children under 10 in the UK has seen pornography on the Internet, and the government, spearheaded by Conservative MP Claire Perry, wants to protect those kids at all costs. The irony is, it's not like 10-year-olds have their own computers and Internet connections -- they are either viewing porn at home, at a friend's house, or at school. If dad, or mom, opts into the porn whitelist, we're back at square one.

Of course, the other option is that mom and dad swear off the porn altogether, for the sake of the children. But is that really a fair system? Isn't that just censorship, dressed up as something else?

"Oh, yeah, we're making alcohol opt-in too. Most children are abused by drunken parents... and you don't want to abuse your kids, right?" While we're at it, how about a special ID card that lets you buy pornographic magazines and DVDs from shops? Why should the Internet be treated differently?

Seriously, the reasoning behind this program is that porn is damaging to children. As in, on a mental health level, children are being scarred by the early viewing of porn. Why porn, instead of violent imagery? Is porn really more perverse than the face-planting, gonad-thumping masochism readily available on YouTube? Will video games be next, and will you have to carry them in brown paper bags?

Mac App Store to open January 6, available in 90 countries

Apple has just published a press release that confirms a January 6 opening of the Mac App Store. It will be available in 90 countries, and feature free and paid apps. Mac OS X Snow Leopard (time to upgrade from 10.5!) users will need a free download via Software Update before they can use the App Store.

The Mac App Store, if it isn't obvious, aims to revolutionize the distribution of PC programs in much the same way as the iOS App Store. The idea is to provide quick and easy access to the latest and greatest in Mac OS X apps, and will feature categories, staff picks, and customer reviews and ratings, just like the other App Store.

The only comparable service to the Mac App Store is Valve's Steam, and it will be interesting to see whether Apple's new offering nibbles away at Steam's market share. More importantly, it's now only a matter of time until an equivalent marketplace emerges on the Windows platform; and indeed, could the fragmented Windows ecosystem even support an App Store?
